MdHIMA President’s Message

A new year. A new President.  Renewed hope. And after decades of anticipation – ICD-10-CM!  What a way to start a year!

In the January 16 Federal Register, the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) published the final rule regarding the adoption of ICD-10-CM and ICD-10-PCS as a replacement for ICD-9-CM.  The implementation date is set for October 1, 2013. I’m sure most of you are extremely excited about the transition to ICD-10.  But it is also quite daunting to begin all the preparation and education that is needed.  MdHIMA will be doing its part to support you by providing educational opportunities to meet your needs.  We already have several speakers confirmed on this topic for our May Annual Meeting.  Stayed tuned to AHIMA’s webpage to keep current on ICD-10 information.

I ‘d like to extend a personal invitation to all of you to join us in Washington, D.C. this March and participate in AHIMA’s Team Talks and Capitol Hill Day.  This is a year of change.  Come to our nation’s capital and be part of that change.   With many new congressmen newly sworn into office, it’s the perfect time to acquaint them with our profession.  Hill Day is one of AHIMA’s best events and is open to all members to participate.  In the past several years, nearly 200 members from across the country have come to D.C. to meet with their legislators.  MdHIMA has been a very active participant.  I encourage you to consider joining us as we meet with our congressmen on important issues related to health information management.  This is one way to let your voice be heard. For more information, see a featured article later in this newsletter.

Please check our Calendar of Events for the many educational sessions planned for this year (http://www.mdhima.org/CalendarofEvents.html).  As you requested, several coding credential preparation classes are scheduled for this spring.

Planning is also well underway for our biggest event of the year, the MdHIMA Annual Meeting.  Annual Meeting Committee members have been working diligently on the many details.  Vendor registration information is now available on our website.  The detailed program and registration for all participants will be coming out in the next few weeks.  So, mark your calendars for May 7th and 8th at the Baltimore Convention Center.  This year’s theme celebrates team spirit.

Happy New Year!  Best wishes to all of you in 2009!

ICD-10 Update

On January 15, 2009 the Department of Health and Human Services published a final rule in the Federal Registry to establish ICD-10 as the new national coding standard.  The compliance date for this regulation is October 1, 2013.  The International Classification of Disease 10th revision (ICD-10-CM) and the International Classification of Procedure Coding System (ICD-10-PCS) as well as the Official ICD-10-CM Guidelines for Coding and the Official ICD-10 PCS Guidelines for Coding and Reporting will become effective for all patients discharged as of 10/1/2013.  As with ICD-9-CM the ICD-10-PCS will only be mandated for hospital inpatient procedures.

While many in the industry are pleased that the date was moved from October 2011, there are others who are disappointed.  As has been stated in many articles ICD-9-CM is not meeting current healthcare data needs, and the ICD-9-CM coding structure and capabilities are in crisis.  ICD-9-CM is 30 years old and cannot accurately describe the diagnoses and inpatient procedures of care delivered in the 21st century.  I think there are few who would disagree that the move is necessary and most are anxiously awaiting the change.

Now that we have the final date, it is time to begin an implementation plan.  There are many factors to be addressed and it is not too early to develop a plan.  The change in the implementation date will allow the necessary time to develop these plans, and allow more time for education.  Facilities can begin to inventory all internal support systems that will be impacted by the change and review vendor contracts as they relate to ICD-10-CM coding.  Assessments on implementation cost can be developed and budget issues can be addressed.  As for training of the staff, educational opportunities always exist and can never be started too early .  Your coding staff should continue to strive for any additional educational opportunity in anatomy & physiology, disease process, and pharmacology.  Additional education in these areas will help with ICD-9-CM and ICD-10-CM which incorporates greater specificity and clinical detail.

Hill Date Set for March 24, 2009

Hill Day is set for Tuesday, March 24, 2009.  This is your chance to go to Washington, DC to visit your delegates to Congress.  Because more than nine percent of the new senators and representatives are new to their jobs, many have not had a conversation with an HIM professional.  Now is the time to get their attention!

If you are interested in attending, registration is now open and will remain open until February 20.  This is also the cutoff date for AHIMA’s room block at Hill Day Headquarters at the Renaissance M Street Hotel. There is no charge for Hill Day or its associated event, Winter Team Talks or the Policy Briefing on March 23. Click here for more details.

We Need Your Vote

The Nominating Committee has been carefully considering the names submitted for the MdHIMA Executive Board for 2009-2010.  They have the difficult task of reviewing all applicants to select the most qualified candidates for each office.  The elections will take place later this spring via electronic ballot.   Results of the election will be announced during the Business Meeting of the Annual Meeting on May 7, 2009.

MdHIMA Annual Meeting

Save the Date!  MdHIMA’s biggest event of the year, the Annual Meeting, is being planned for May 7 & 8, 2009 at the Baltimore Convention Center.  This year’s theme is “HIM – It Takes a Team.”  Chairs for the event are: Angela Niparko, MBA, RHIA, CHP, Sinai Hospital, Monna Nabors, RHIA, MBA, Erickson Retirement Communities and Lori Brown, RHIA, CHC, Sinai Hospital.  The committee is busy confirming topics and speakers.  General educational tracks as well as data quality tracks are being planned.  Look for more information including online registration in early 2009.

Call For Speakers

Do you know someone who would be a good speaker for our educational sessions?  Perhaps you have specialized knowledge to share with our members.  The MdHIMA website now features a special section where a potential speaker can list their name, contact information and topics on which they would like to speak.  Check out the link to the new speaker bureau database under the calendar or the “What's New” tab.  Look for Interested In Speaking For A MdHIMA Meeting?

Either location will send you to the speaker bureau submission form to register your speaking interests.

MdHIMA Annual Meeting-Silent Auction 2009

MdHIMA's 79th Annual Meeting Silent Auction needs your donations and support to make it a successful event.  All funds raised from the Silent Auction go to support education of our members.  For donation ideas go to the MdHIMA website-  www.MdHIMA.org.  Go to the calendar tab/May/Annual Meeting Listing.  The link will take you to the Silent Auction page for ideas and to register your donation.  If you have any questions you can also contact Christie Ferri, Silent Auction Chair at 301- 251-4664

Another way to help raise funds for the Silent Auction would be to ask vendors that work with you to consider donating items.  Another way for vendors to support MdHIMA at our Annual Meeting would be to take a booth, sponsor an event, or take an ad in our Annual Meeting Brochure.  On-line registration for vendors is now open as well with reduced fees for early registration.  Encourage and remind the vendors and consultants working with you about these possibilities to advertise their services and support MdHIMA.
