Spring has finally arrived and many of us are busy planting grass and flowers that will continue to grow and bloom, with the right amount of nurturing, throughout the summer. Others are finding ourselves caught up in the excitement of filling out our bracket sheets, following the standings in our basketball pool and rooting for our alma mater during “March Madness”! Each year the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) hosts a huge end-of-the-year tournament that every college team works hard throughout the year to be invited to participate in. The tournament starts out with 65 teams being invited to the “big dance”. But since it is a single elimination tournament, you must win to stay in the tournament and continue to play. After the first weekend, half of the teams are eliminated, while the other half advance to the “sweet sixteen”. The next weekend of play identifies the “elite eight” and then the “final four”. The tournament “champion” emerges from the final weekend of play. While the NCAA tournament determines its national champion through the elimination of teams, MdHIMA and AHIMA encourage participation from individuals and teams of people to be champions for our profession. We do not believe in having just one champion. We have many champions who emerge with some nurturing, like the grass and flowers, and with active participation in education, continuing education, committees and elected positions. AHIMA offers each of us an opportunity to participate and be included in the strategic planning of our national organization through Winter Team Talks in Washington, DC, Summer Team Talks in Chicago or through virtual meetings. MdHIMA provides opportunities to express your thoughts and opinions at Quarterly Business Meetings, via our website, or by directly contacting any Board member and offers continual opportunities for participation on committees or task forces. Just take the time to participate. Please welcome the many opportunities that MdHIMA and AHIMA provide to you to participate and continue to learn on your road to becoming a champion. They are the sun and the rain that will nurture your growth and help you to bloom into a true champion. In this case, everybody wins! Happy Spring! Lori |

Helping People Understand Their Health Records
The website also features a public service announcement by John Walsh, host of “America’s Most Wanted.” This public service announcement is scheduled to be broadcast nationally on radio and television stations and directs individuals to www.MyPHR.com. Also on the website is a documentary produced by AHIMA with real-life stories to help healthcare consumers relate to the everyday necessity of managing their own PHRs. AHIMA members can use these videos by logging in to the internet during presentations and playing them to their audience. The update of the www.MyPHR.com website is part of the new PHR Campaign called “It’s HI Time, America!” AHIMA is raising consumer awareness about the right to have their own health information and the benefits of managing their health care through the use of PHRs. Why does AHIMA see this as important? There are many conversations about PHRs in the news, such as insurance companies developing their own PHRs, major retailers (Wal-Mart) joining with software companies to produce a PHR and the increasing information about Health Information Banks in the news. What seems to be missing from the conversations is the consumer education component. “Having championed this cause to overwhelming success throughout the HIM profession, our member-volunteers are expanding the field-now with and extraordinary effort-to include customers in a way that can only lead to healthier, longer happier lives with each PHR we help create”, Marsha Dolen, MBA, RHIA, co-chair of AHIMA Personal Health Records Practice Council said. Member volunteers are helping educate consumers on using a PHR to become an active partner in their healthcare. With this knowledge, consumers can:
AHIMA members have a number of resources available to them in helping educate consumers and fellow healthcare professionals. These include articles and briefs found in the FORE Library: HIM Body of Knowledge, and the Community Education program. This program trains HIM professionals to present AHIMA’s program on developing and maintaining a PHR. The presenters are encouraged to go to community groups and offer to share the video and materials that help consumers obtain their medical records and keep their own PHR. We have a real opportunity to be visible to the public with this material in a way that can help average consumers make a difference in their own health. We should be the health information professional that, as always, advocates for the patients. |
