President’s Message
I hope everyone has
enjoyed their summer, I know I have and I am getting ready for the next
set of holidays coming up in the upcoming months. Last month we had our
first QBM at the Rose Restaurant. For those in attendance I think you
can agree that the topics were excellent and the education committee did
a great job integrating all of the topics into a theme. I look forward
to seeing many of you at the December QBM. Please check out the
Calendar of events for specific information regarding that meeting.
Your delegates have
just returned from AHIMA in Grapevine Texas. We voted on the three
topics (the Volunteer/Leadership Resolution, the Best Practice
Resolution for EHR documentation and the Bylaw amendment on
reapportionment of the House of Delgates). Both resolutions passed
without any issues from the House. The bylaw amendment however was
referred back to the HOD Operations Team for further review and
modification. There was a slight heated discussion on this topic and
the majority of the states felt that more discussion was needed and some
additional clarity provided before we could truly vote on it. Your
delegates will be monitoring any on-line discussion that the team has
with the rest of the House and will provide you with any updates over
the next several months. Be on the look out for e-blasts and additional
polls discussing the new changes as they become available. Link to your
delegates photos at HOD.
Sallie Tyner

Coordinator Recognition for Excellence. Congratulations to Sallie!
Christie Ferri received an AHIMA Foundation Scholarship to continue to
further pursue her education. Read more on the program later in the
Newsletter. Congratulations to Christie!

AHIMA Foundation Merit
Scholarships
The AHIMA Foundation offers scholarships to students
currently enrolled in accredited health information management programs. The
student must have completed at least 6 credit hours in core HIM coursework
before they are eligible to apply for a scholarship. In addition, they must
have at least one full semester (6 credit hours) of classes remaining in
their course of study at the time the award is granted. There are three
levels of scholarships offered: for an HIT AA degree ($1000), for a HIA
BA/BS degree ($1200) and graduate scholarships for credentialed
professionals pursuing a masters or doctoral degree in an area related to
HIM practice ($2500).
The AHIMA Foundation Merit Scholarships are awarded
twice a year, June 15 and December 15. In the first cycle of awards, $50,500
was awarded to 39 students. Congratulations to Christie Ferri, RHIT of
MdHIMA who was awarded a scholarship.
This is wonderful news but we need more students from
MdHIMA to apply for scholarships. The next opportunity for scholarships is
this fall. The deadline for the fall cycle is October 31st at
midnight and the deadline for the spring cycle is April 24th at
midnight. Students wishing to apply for the scholarships should visit
www.ahimafoundation.org/Scholarships/MeritScholarships.aspx to review the scholarship requirements as well as to apply for the
scholarships. It is essential for students to follow the directions and
supply all of the necessary documents by the deadlines in order for the
application to be considered.
