MdHIMA President’s Message
Greetings All! It’s that time of year
again – it’s back to school time! We’re putting our children onto their
first school bus, we’re keeping our fingers crossed as our older
children move in to middle school or high school, and the tears come
easily as we watch our young adults pack up their most prized
possessions as they head off to college.
But back to school time is not just for
our kids – many of us may be returning to the classroom to further our
own education. We are all trying to abide by the life-long learning
resolution that was passed by the AHIMA House of Delegates a few years
ago.
Speaking of education, recently we’ve
seen some changes in our local colleges that offer HIM programs.
Hagerstown Business College has changed its name to Kaplan College, the
Community College of Baltimore County – Catonsville is in candidacy
status for CAHIIM accreditation for the innovative Health Informatics &
Information Technology program that they offer and we have our first
students enrolled in the Coppin State University baccalaureate degree
HIM program, which is also seeking accreditation from CAHIIM. The
opportunities for formal educational programs, as well as general
continuing education credits, are growing throughout Maryland. All of
these educational opportunities are coming at a good time
But with all this talk about education,
I have to wonder – have you heard about AHIMA’s Visions 2016? This
lengthy document, which is available on the AHIMA website, sets the
stage for some major changes within the HIM arena between now and 2016.
Vision 2016 plans to raise the bar for those persons wanting to sit for
the various HIM–related credentials. For example, a coder of the future
might need to have earned an associates’ degree before being able to sit
for any of the coding certifications, or a baccalaureate degree may be
required before sitting for the RHIT exam, or those wishing to sit for
the RHIA exam may be required to have a masters degree. Will our great
state have the higher learning opportunities that may be required for us
to successfully continue in our chosen profession? Will these changes
in educational requirements be beneficial or detrimental to our
profession?
Hopefully your curiosity has been
aroused! Check out the new and exciting opportunities at our schools of
higher learning, check out AHIMA’s 2016 Vision, and start doing a self
assessment. Will you be prepared for the future of Health
Information Management?
Have a great school year!
