President’s Message

As President of MdHIMA, I have participated in many enlightening and fulfilling opportunities to promote our profession and I look forward to continuing to do so during the next three months.

The “Winter Team Talks” were held on Monday, March 28th at the Capitol Hilton in Washington, D.C. Attending with me were MdHIMA Delegates Sallie Tyner, Dolores Stephens, Monna Nabers, President-elect Dina Smoker, and Secretary Tiffany Edwards. The day was filled with information about the Work Accomplished in 2010, the Mission and Vision statements, the HIM Professional Model, the Key 2011 Initiatives Positioning, and Reports from the House of Delegates and House Teams.

The major surprise was the report on “Governance: AHIMA Bylaws Follow–up”. AHIMA announced that a bylaws revision process will take place. The basic part is to define roles of the AHIMA Board and the House of Delegates. One of the quotes from the meeting stated, “The Board governs the association, the House governs the profession.” MdHIMA needs to ensure that we understand exactly what this statement means in terms of governing the association as compared to governing the profession. This discussion is planned for the Summer Team Talks in Chicago on July 15th and with a potential vote at the House of Delegates meeting during the Annual Meeting in Salt Lake City, Utah on October 2nd.

On Tuesday, March 29th, Hill Day began at 7 a.m. with breakfast at the Capitol Hilton Hotel. The MdHIMA members who attended Hill Day with me were Dolores Stephens, Kathryn Singleton-Cane, Patricia A. Weis, Christi Sarasin, and Jennifer Della’Zanna. Our team was able to deliver the AHIMA packets and meet with the staff of our Maryland Senators, Congressmen and Congresswomen in order to deliver our message and outline AHIMA 2011 issues. The primary issues for this year are (1) Recognition of the Health Information Management Profession, (2) Health Information Management Workforce (Funding for HIM Education), (3) Support of ARRA-HITECH Program (Maintain ONC and ARRA-HITECH Funding), and (4) Unique Health Identifier Standard (Study of Patient Identity).

I am looking forward to the MdHIMA Annual Meeting on May 19th – 20th, 2011 at the Baltimore Convention Center. The Annual Committee has worked very hard to make this event educational, informative, and entertaining for our members and I encourage everyone to attend this meeting. Members may visit the MdHIMA website (www.mdhima.org) to review the deadline for the scholarship application and the deadline for the annual meeting registration. I am confident that we will achieve a record breaking attendance at this meeting. If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact me via email (akeyjr@comcast.net) or telephone (301-821-6373).

Sincerely,

Albert M. Key, Jr., MS, RHIA
President, MdHIMA

Support MdHIMA Educational Initiatives

Do you ever ask yourself how you can make a difference in someone’s life, how can you give back to your profession and community?  It really is not difficult to make a difference in someone’s life.  You can be a mentor to a student, volunteer, teacher, counselor, advisor and a good friend.

MdHIMA holds a Silent Auction at the Annual Meeting to raise funds for education.  A portion of these funds are put toward the two $1,000 scholarships that MdHIMA typically awards each year.  It is through the generous donations of members that we are able to give students scholarships.

Please consider donating an item for the Silent Auction.  Items auctioned in the past have included jewelry, crafts, household items, artwork, and tickets to an event or even a weekend getaway.  Be creative and support the MdHIMA educational initiatives
.

MdHIMA Represented at Educational and Resource Fair

On Sunday March 27, 2011, Brian Bennighoff and Janice Greenberg represented MdHIMA at an Educational and Resource Fair for Seniors, Family, Caregivers and the Community. This fair was held at Beth Israel Synagogue in Owings Mills, Maryland with speakers and vendors geared to aging and related health care issues.

The vending area was well attended and our table received many inquires about MdHIMA; who we are and what we do. Our focus was specific to Personal Health Records (PHR).

We encourage our membership to recommend our participation at similar venues.
