Under the direction of the Director, Health Information Management, Manager of Coding is responsible for the management of the operations of the Health Information Management functions and activities associated with coding, billing accuracy, abstracting, data quality and integrity of information entered into the patient databases maintained by the HIM Department. Supervises the personnel and functions involved in Coding/DRG assignment, Abstracting functions. Is responsible for implementing effective policies & procedures and monitoring the activities of the coding/abstracting areas to assure that all processes are value added and performed in an error-free, quality fashion. Serves as a liaison to all other departments for educating and improving the documentation processes to support quality coding and reimbursement.
Education: A Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT) or a Registered Health Information Administrator (RHIA) or a Certified Coding Specialist (CCS) or a Certified Professional Coder (CPC) or equivalent in education, training or experience plus one (1) year of previous progressive management experience in an HIM department setting. Certified Coding Specialist (CCS) certification is preferred. Prior management experience must include staff development, budget accountability, goal setting, quality improvement and project management.
Experience: Experience applying customer service behaviors and communication skills required. One (1) year of previous progressive management experience in an HIM department setting. Prior management experience must include staff development, budget accountability, goal setting, quality improvement and project management. Must possess good general mental health; ability to work under pressure; demonstrated analytical ability to solve complex problems. Demonstrated ability to direct the work of a diversified staff. Strong communication skills required; verbal, written and interpersonal. Must have the ability to work independently and possess good time management skills. General good health as reflected in attendance; good visual and auditory acuity. Must be an organized individual that demonstrates positive professional conduct. Able to type 45 w.p.m. Knowledge of PC applications such as Word, Excel, or other word processing, spreadsheet, database management applications required.
Certifications/Licensure: Certification as an RHIA or RHIT or CPC or CCS.
