MATCH IT Act Introduced

AHIMA Advocacy and MdHIMA Advocacy are happy to announce that late last week, Representatives Mike Kelly (R-PA) and Bill Foster (D-IL) introduced H.R. 7379, the Patient Matching and Transparency in Certified Health IT (MATCH IT) Act of 2024.

AHIMA has been a long-time advocate on the issue of addressing patient misidentification, and this legislation is the next step in improving patient matching. To improve patient matching within healthcare, the MATCH IT Act will:

  • Define and standardize a patient match rate that accounts for duplicate records, overlaid records, multiple records, and mismatch rates;
  • Direct the Office of the National Coordinator for Health IT (ONC) to develop an industry-standard demographic data set and standards for those demographic elements to improve patient matching;
  • Update the ONC Health IT Certification Program requirements to include the industry standard data set; and
  • Begin to measure patient match rates by including a voluntary bonus measure attestation within the Promoting Interoperability Program for eligible providers who meet a high accuracy match rate, and development of a voluntary anonymous reporting system at ONC.

AHIMA Board President/Chair Mona Calhoun, PhD, MS, Med, RHIA, FAHIMA, was quoted in the press releases from the offices of Representatives Kelly and Foster and the Patient ID Now coalition.

Maryland Members please visit the AHIMA Action Center to contact your Representatives and urge them to support this vital legislation!  We also have social media campaigns in the Action Center to amplify the message about this bill and we will be taking this bill to Capitol Hill during our Advocacy Summit Hill Day on March 12.

Thank you,
