I’m reaching out to you because we are asking for your assistance in a grassroots effort to advance HR 3545 over the next two weeks. Aligned with AHIMA, Delegates from MdHIMA and a few Executive Board members attended the Advocacy Summit in March, 2018 and one of our “asks” this year was for our elected Representatives to support and co-sponsor HR 3545, the Overdose Prevention and Patient Safety Act. HR 3545 seeks to align the 42 CFR Part 2 regulation, a law that regulates the sharing of substance use disorder records with HIPAA for purposes of treatment, payment and healthcare operations.
We were informed this morning that the Committee hopes to mark-up HR 3545 at the full committee level the week of May 14 following a hearing on May 8. However, we need your help!
We have heard that Energy & Commerce Committee Democrats’ support and co-sponsorship of HR 3545 is critical to advancing the bill. We are asking your assistance in contacting your U.S. Representative(s) through the AHIMA’s Advocacy Action Center at www.ahima.org. To help expedite correspondence, we have already generated a message to your U.S. Representatives. You only have to put in your zip code and personal information to contact their Representative. Your assistance is critical to advancing HR 3545. The Chairman of the Energy & Commerce Committee is committed to advancing a legislative package that will address our current opioid crisis before Memorial Day—we want to make sure that HR 3545 is part of this solution!
Please let us know if we can answer any questions or concerns that you may have. Thanks for everything that you do for the HIM profession and AHIMA.
